New Delhi: Amid a wave of misinformation following the Pahalgam terror attack, the Government of India has issued a clarification debunking rumours surrounding the departure of Lieutenant General M.V. Suchindra Kumar as head of the Northern Command. Several social media accounts, particularly pro-Pakistan handles, had falsely claimed that Lt Gen Kumar was removed from his position due to alleged internal fallout after the attack.

The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit categorically rejected these claims, labelling them as fake. In a post on X, the official handle of PIB Fact Check clarified that Lt Gen M.V. Suchindra Kumar is retiring on April 30 upon reaching superannuation, a standard practice within the Indian Army's service regulations.

The PIB also confirmed that Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, currently the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy), will take over as the new General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Udhampur-based Northern Command on May 1. His appointment was approved by the government prior to the Pahalgam incident, thereby refuting any claims of an abrupt change linked to the terror attack or political dissatisfaction.
