'Pissed Off' Whistleblowers Reveals What Went Wrong With SEGA's ... - XboxAchievements

Last week, SEGA put the kibosh on Creative Assembly's PvPvE shooter heist game Hyenas, cancelling it rather unexpectedly, as part of a restructuring effort to reduce expenses at the company. Reportedly, however, a number of other factors have contributed to Hyenas' untimely demise.

According to a report from Total War YouTuber Volound (corroborated by VGC via GameSpot), Hyenas was SEGA's “biggest budget game ever”, and its attempt to break into the live-service game market. Part of the reason the game was axed, however, is down to some of its unique concepts being diluted to appeal to as broad an audience as possible, and an overall lack of direction regarding the game's identity.

“Multiple whistleblowers” primarily comprising "pissed off developers that want to see some accountability and honesty" cite struggles at developer Creative Assembly, apparently before Hyenas even reached the concept stage. With Alien: Isolation failing to perform in line with SEGA's expectations, the lack of a sequel caused many employees to leave. The remainder of the team moved on to ‘Project Keaton’, which eventually became Hyenas.

The game was conceived as something inspired by “lovable rogues” like Han Solo, with other inspirations including Joss Whedon sci-fi series Firefly, and 2017 tactical FPS, Escape From Tarkov. Alien: Isolation fan Neill Blomkamp (director of District 9, Chappie, Elysium, Gran Turismo) also came on board to provide creative input, suggesting the idea of Hyenas'...
