PL accuses PN MEP Peter Agius of ‘false claims’ on Gozo sewage - The Malta Independent

The Labour Party has accused PN MEP Peter Agius of making false claims in the European Parliament after he alleged that sewage was being discharged into the sea in Gozo, saying that footage released by the Water Services Corporation contradicts his statements.

The PL on Thursday issued a statement saying that "once again, PN MEP Peter Agius has been caught lying, this time after going to the European Parliament and falsely claiming that sewage is being pumped into the sea in Gozo."

The statement said that Agius boasted that the video was presented to the European Parliament, but the Water Services Corporation released footage taken by professional divers which it said clearly showed that what Agius said was a "lie."

"The Labour Party condemns the behaviour of someone who is supposed to represent Malta and Gozo in European institutions and asks whether the Nationalist Party will condemn this type of deceit," it said.

The PL said that its primary concern remains the welfare of the Maltese people and the national interest.

On Tuesday, Agius had called for immediate action on sewage outflows into the Maltese coastal waters in an appeal to the European Commission.

He made the appeal during the discussion of a petition presented by Benjamin Mifsud Scicluna on behalf of Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar, and said that there are ongoing failures in wastewater management that are resulting in sewage discharge contaminating the ocean and repeated beach closures.
