Plaintiff obtains six-figure settlement in wrongful termination and whistleblower case - Missouri Lawyers Media

A Kansas City property manager has obtained a $116,754 award three years after she was wrongfully fired after making a whistleblower complaint.

The plaintiff, Courtney Hargrove, was represented by Daniel L. Doyle & Robert A. Bruce of Doyle & Bruce in Kansas City.

At the time of her termination, Doyle said Hargrove was a model employee. She was the manager of the Steeplechase Apartments in Kansas City — a complex so large it spanned two different school districts.

The size of the apartment complex is relevant to Hargrove’s whistleblower complaint because during her employment, she learned her supervisor was using lease documents to falsify addresses so her daughter could attend the more desirable school district, Doyle said.

Hargrove reported this to the Human Resources department and began facing retaliation, culminating in the company terminating her employment and accusing her of time theft.

“Evidence disclosed that the supervisor had requested specific times and dates of video footage which showed Plaintiff outside of the leasing office and alleged that she had been off property and thus stealing time,” according to Doyle. “Plaintiff was only told that she was ‘unhappy’ at her termination meeting. She requested a service letter and Defendant claimed it never received the request.”

The case was tried before a jury to evaluate whether the termination was a result of Hargrove’s whistleblower complaint. Bruce said the jury had to consider whether it was believable...
