Police Arrest 10 for Fake News on North Korea Oil Leak - 조선일보

Individuals who spread fake news related to the Middle East war, including claims that “900,000 barrels of crude oil stored at the Ulsan Petroleum Reserve Base had leaked to North Korea,” have been arrested by police.

Director Park Sung-joo of the National Police Agency National Office of Investigation stated during a regular press briefing on the 11th, “We are investigating 38 accounts that spread fake news related to the Middle East war, centered on provincial and metropolitan police agency cyber investigation units. So far, we have identified 20 netizens and arrested 10 individuals.” The charges include violations of the Telecommunications Basic Act.

By type of fake news, five individuals were arrested for spreading the claim about 900,000 barrels of crude oil leaking to North Korea. Additionally, five others were arrested for disseminating false information that the government would enforce dollar sell-offs, currency exchange regulations, and other measures under an emergency fiscal order.

Among those arrested is former Korean history instructor and YouTuber Jeon Han-gil, who spread the fake news through his YouTube channel “Jeon Han-gil News.” Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan filed a complaint against Jeon in March for defamation through false statements and obstruction of business via false information.
