Police brutality: Compensation team warns of fraudulent claims - Daily Nation

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has kicked off the process of identifying victims of police brutality for compensation.

The State agency on Monday announced it was in the process of developing framework for reparations of victims even as it warned against fraudulent claims.

It called upon victims of human rights violations, including victims of protests and demonstrations, to report to the agency’s offices in Nairobi, Kitale, Kisumu, Mombasa, Nyahururu, Wajir, Kajiado, Isiolo and Garissa. The victims are required to submit supporting documents like P3 forms, medical reports, OB reports, postmortem among others.

“The commission has initiated internal work, begun mapping areas most affected by protest-related and other human rights violations, and started engaging key stakeholders so that a credible framework can be put in place to guide a transparent, accountable, and comprehensive reparations process,” KNCHR Chairperson Claris Ogangah said.

“The KNCHR has adopted a clear roadmap for the development of Reparations Policy and Reparations Bill in line with its mandate. The roadmap includes the establishment of technical committees that bring together KNCHR commissioners and staff, relevant State agencies and independent oversight bodies, civil society organisations and representatives of victims and survivors.”
