Police: No evidence to support social media claims of rape at a Westmoreland shelter - Jamaica Gleaner

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) says it has found no evidence of rape at a shelter in Westmoreland following social media claims that a sexual assault had occurred there.

In a statement issued Saturday, the police said their investigation revealed that there was an incident that involved a physical confrontation between a female visitor and a male at the shelter, which was broken up by other occupants.

It said both individuals later left the premises, and the police were notified.

Statements have since been recorded.

The JCF is urging the public to refrain from sharing unverified information, warning that false claims can fuel panic and mistrust among displaced residents and volunteers.

Police presence has been increased at several shelters to maintain safety, and the Force has reiterated its commitment to transparency and community protection amid ongoing recovery efforts.

Westmoreland is among the parishes hardest hit by Hurricane Melissa, with thousands displaced and several emergency shelters still housing affected residents.
