Police Seek Arrest Warrant for YouTuber Jeon Han-gil Over Defamation of President Lee, Reform Party Leader - 조선일보

Police have applied for a bench warrant for YouTuber Jeon Han-gil (real name Jeon Yu-gwan), a former Korean history lecturer, on charges of defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 10th that it recently requested the bench warrant from the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, citing defamation allegations against President Lee Jae Myung and Reform Party leader Lee Jun-seok.

Jeon allegedly cited and broadcast claims on his YouTube channel on the 18th of last month that “President Lee Jae Myung handed over 160 trillion won in slush funds and military secrets to China.” On the 23rd of last month, he reportedly stated about Lee Jun-seok, “There are many suspicions about whether he even graduated from Harvard University formally.” In response, the Democratic Party’s legal team and Lee Jun-seok filed a complaint and criminal report with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, accusing Jeon of defamation through false statements under the Information and Communications Network Act.

Police investigated Jeon three times from last month to this month before applying for the bench warrant. Jeon is scheduled to attend the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office at 2 p.m. on the 13th for a pre-warrant suspect interrogation. The pre-warrant suspect interrogation, introduced in 2021 to protect suspects’ human rights, occurs before prosecutors request a warrant.
