Policewoman cleared of encouraging daughter to make false claims about her father - Newsbook

A policewoman was found not guilty of encouraging her daughter to falsely accuse her father of defiling her, with a magistrate concluding that she had only done her duty as a mother and police officer by taking her daughter’s allegations seriously.

The man had been acquitted of defiling his daughter, who had claimed that he had shown her pornographic movies on his phone. The magistrate acquitting him had reached the conclusion that the girl was repeating a false story that was told to her, prompting the man to report her mother to the police.

The police concluded that there were no grounds to investigate their colleague, however, prompting the man to file challenge proceedings. The proceedings were successful, and in 2022 the police were ordered to institute criminal proceedings against the woman.

The woman was thus charged with making calumnious accusations, perjury, subornation of perjury and making a false oath: charges which were considered aggravated since she was a public official.

She denied any wrongdoing, stressing that she had only followed up her daughter’s accusations and took the matter up to the authorities.

She also noted that the man had filed numerous reports against her, leading her to be investigated by the Malta Police Force’s Internal Affairs Unit, and that he had never faced any consequences for it. On the other hand, she lamented, she was the one who ended up under investigation “for doing her duty as a mother.”
