Minister: 'Lack of affordability and infrastructure' the reason electric cars are not in high demand
Government minister Seema Malhotra was asked about the transition to electric vehicles following the announcement that the government will consult on the rules requiring car makers to meet certain sales targets.
The announcement came after Stellantis announced the closure of the iconic Vauxhall plant in Luton on Tuesday.
Ms Malhotra insisted that the decision by Stellantis was a "commercial" one, despite government efforts to change their mind.
She noted that investment is still coming into the UK from Stellantis - their operations are simply being consolidated at one plant.
On electric vehicles themselves and the difficulties car manufacturers are having in meeting the mandated sales targets each year, the minister said: "Part of the issue has been affordability and also the infrastructure to support that."
