Poorly communicated redundancies prompt workers to consider quitting, survey finds - People Management

Third of employees report finding out about layoffs through workplace gossip, as experts warn unclear messaging erodes trust and harms retention

Poor communication during redundancies is prompting employees to reconsider their future with their employer, research has revealed.

Half of employees who witnessed redundancies, but were not laid off themselves, said poor communication made them consider leaving their own role, according to a survey of more than 1,000 UK workers by workforce solutions provider Careerminds.

Only 28 per cent of employees made redundant felt leadership was fully transparent about the reasons, while 49 per cent said communication was partial and 23 per cent said it lacked transparency altogether.

The findings come amid Snapchat owner’s recent decision to cut around 1,000 roles – roughly 16 per cent of its workforce – via a same-day email with no prior warning.

“Redundancy is hard enough to process, but finding out through a mass email makes it even harder to move forward,” said Amanda Augustine, resident careers expert at Careerminds. “How a company handles these moments says everything about how much they truly value their people.”
