EDMONTON – The president of the Alberta Federation of Labour, Gil McGowan, is expressing strong support for the Alberta NDP’s private member’s bill, Public Interest Disclosure (Publicly Funded Health Entity Whistleblower Protection) Act (Bill 204). The bill aims to provide a framework to protect whistleblowers who flag wrongdoing or misuse of funds. The bill would strengthen transparency and accountability in the health care system, in which procurement consists of a significant portion of costs.

“Albertans have learned that the UCP cannot be trusted to run our public health care system,” said McGowan. “All Alberta taxpayers should be worried about the serious allegations of corruption, incompetence, intimidation, mismanagement of public funds, and outright criminality. Only by strengthening the public service, the role of public-sector unions, and protecting whistleblowers, can we ensure that the system is restored to what Albertans expect it to be.”

Last week, the Alberta Legislative Standing Committee on Resource Stewardship met to continue the review of the Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act (PIDA). Strengthening whistleblower protection is also a key part of the Democracy chapter of the Worker Agenda that the Alberta Federation of Labour is advocating for.
