Proposed bill would improve conditions for CT gig workers - CT Insider

HARTFORD — Connecticut rideshare and delivery workers chanted "Better wages!" outside the Legislative Office Building Thursday morning in hopes that rallying, grassroots organizing and a new Senate bill will be enough to compel tech giants like Uber and Lyft to pay a living wage.

The workers, many of whom are part of Connecticut Drivers United, represent employees of Uber and Lyft as well as food delivery services like DoorDash, GrubHub and Instacart. With the help of Yale Law School's Worker and Immigrant Rights Advocacy Clinic, CDU is pushing for passage of a bill specifically for gig workers, Senate Bill 1180.

"The goal is to improve conditions for workers and rideshare drivers as soon as possible," said Teddy Williams, law student intern with the Yale Worker and Immigrant Rights Advocacy Clinic.

The bill, which had a public hearing Thursday morning following the rally, has three main provisions. The first provision would install a permanent and per mile minimum for wages. Many drivers spoke about making significantly below minimum wage on the job.

Alex Johnson, rideshare and delivery driver from North Haven, held a photo of a DoorDash delivery that left the driver with only about $5.

"This is $5 and some change for three deliveries, three restaurants, three houses that was supposed to take 45 minutes, but I promise you, with the wait time, it will take an hour," Johnson said.
