Prosecutors sought a one-year prison term for a YouTuber indicted on charges of spreading false information about Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, and cohabiting partner Kim Hee-young, a director at the T&C Foundation. The YouTuber is known to be a close associate of Roh Soh-yeong, director of the Art Center Nabi, who is in divorce proceedings with Chey.
On the 17th, at the first trial on charges of defamation under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection for YouTuber Park, a person surnamed Park (70), held before the single-judge Criminal Division 11 of the Seoul Northern District Court (Presiding Judge Seo Young-hyo), prosecutors asked the court to sentence Park to one year in prison.
Prosecutors asked for this sentence, noting Park’s responsibility for distributing fake news (false or manipulated information) and that the victims want punishment.
From June to October last year, on more than 10 occasions, Park allegedly posted videos and writings on a personal YouTube channel and blog containing baseless claims about Chey and Director Kim, including a rumor of a 100 billion won donation, allegations of interference with a child’s employment, and other falsehoods related to the family. The Criminal Division 1 of the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors’ Office indicted Park without detention in July.
