BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) -- Several people took to the Broome County jail Monday, protesting the detention of 37-year-old Guan Heng, an activist and documentarian who protestors say is currently being held at the county jail.
The group traveled from New York City to call for Heng’s release.
Heng is a Chinese national who documented China’s mass detention camps targeting Uyghurs and other minorities. He fled to the U.S. seeking asylum, but is currently detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and faces the possibility of deportation.
To some supporters, Heng’s actions are regarded as heroic.
“I am an immigrant, but I am a human. I should have the human right. This guy is a hero!” said one protestor.
“He says it well, ‘people who do not wish to be enslaved, do not wish to see others enslaved.’ I do not wish to see Guan Heng enslaved or sent to some crazy place on this planet that he has no relation to. He applied for asylum; he should get asylum,” said Ithaca resident Amala.
Heng’s next court date is January 12.
According to the President of Justice and Unity for the Southern Tier, or JUST, Andy Pragacz, the prosecution is attempting to submit a motion to deport Heng to Uganda.
