Psychic's False Predictions Led Man to Suicide, Widow Claims - Newsweek

A widow is alleging that her husband killed himself after a woman who advertises her services as a psychic medium incorrectly told him he was suffering from cancer.

Grieving Becky Courtney launched a consumer protection complaint in Iowa after alleging that her husband Craig had been left so devastated by the supposed diagnosis that he took his own life earlier this year. She accused Allison Campbell, who describes herself online as an Altoona-based "psychic medium," of leaving him too terrified to face the future.

Her complaint stated: "The experiences with Ms. Campbell and the information shared caused Craig to be at a very heightened, vulnerable state – psychologically, emotionally, and physically. After sharing with his family and friends the extreme fear of physically and mentally deteriorating as a result of cancer being throughout his body over the coming three to five months, Craig died by his own hand on July 23, 2022."

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller launched an investigation into the claims that Campbell had violated the Consumer Fraud Act. On Thursday, he reached a settlement with Campbell, who has now agreed to stop claiming in advertising that she has the ability to diagnose, treat, or cure clients' physical or mental health issues.

She also agreed to remove Craig Courtney's likeness from her marketing materials, and agreed to always inform clients that they should seek professional medical help if they mention, or she believes, that they are suffering from...
