Rebecca Rainey: Baltimore, Phoenix, and Augusta, Maine, are among five cities the Biden administration selected as targets for its job training resources from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPs Act, and Inflation Reduction Act.

The White House said it will get hands on with state and local leaders in those areas later this summer to expand apprenticeship and training opportunities in industries that will have a high demand for workers under new infrastructure, clean energy, and manufacturing initiatives.

In an interview with Punching In, Brent Parton, acting head of the Labor Department’s Employment and Training Administration, said the five “Workforce Hubs,” will be used as a model to replicate across the country to skill-up the workforce needed to deliver on President Joe Biden’s broad infrastructure and economic agenda.

Columbus, Ohio, and Pittsburgh will also participate in the program.

Parton said the idea is to set a “workforce strategy” for states where they see job training programs as a solution to meeting their local labor market needs.

“Now is the time to build on what works, but to do things differently,” said Parton, adding that his subagency will also work with 15 cities directly to provide technical assistance and resources to their workforce development boards that oversee local apprenticeship programs.
