Reader Opinion: False reporting? - Brainerd Dispatch

A recent story in the Dispatch reported on the county attorney preparing to answer questions related to a request for an election audit before the Board of Commissioners. I don't see why the question would pivot on the county attorney, but that's a different matter.

The reporter was either not listening, or intentionally slanting the story when she said several unproven or false accusations were made by citizens in attendance.

Constituents are requesting a forensic audit of the election to verify election integrity. Several people repeated that this was not about overturning the last election. Speakers repeatedly asked for reassurance and accused no one of fraud, accused no one of malpractice, accused no one of incompetence.

Quite the contrary; people thanked the election judges and officials along with the board members.

But our most precious citizen franchise is the fairly cast ballot. It is certainly not unreasonable to ask officials we elect to investigate the security of that process.

After all, We the People are ultimately in charge, and therefore, ultimately responsible to see that We protect Our interests.

Besides, if we do indeed have an honestly functioning process, isn't it nice to demonstrate that for the public? What is there to fear if our system is as spotless as the League of Women Voters claims it is?

There are many groups and governmental agencies that are adamant about extending the voting privilege to every possible voter in any possible manner. Yet...
