Recycled fake check scam | Victims targeted with fraudulent checks and promises of lottery winnings - WGAL

A fake check scam is making a comeback, tricking victims into depositing fraudulent checks and forwarding money under the guise of lottery winnings.

Consumer investigator Brian Roche explained that scammers often recycle their schemes after a period of inactivity.

How the scam works

In this version of the scam, victims receive a check for $9,700 along with a letter claiming they have won $750,000 in a digital lottery. The letter instructs recipients not to do anything with the check until they contact a claims agent.

"If the victim does call, they are told to deposit the check in the bank and then immediately forward most of the money to pay those taxes and fees," Roche said.

A few days later, the bank informs the victim that the check has bounced, leaving them responsible for thousands of dollars. By that time, the scammer has disappeared.

Warning signs and advice

"This is just one version of the fake check scam," Roche said. "The thing to remember is—if you get a large check from a stranger and you're being asked to return most of the money, that's a scam."

Roche emphasized the importance of caution, adding, "This is one that falls in the category of—if it sounds too good to be true, it's a scam.
