LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — An OB-GYN in Reno, Dr. Samuel R. Chacon, made his initial court appearance on Wednesday, facing allegations of defrauding health care benefit programs by submitting false claims for unnecessary gynecologic tests and surgical procedures.
According to court documents, Dr. Chacon, owner of Women’s Health Center of Reno, allegedly submitted false claims to various health care programs, including Medicaid and Anthem Blue Cross, from Jan. 1, 2017, to Nov. 22, 2022.
The indictment claims these procedures, which included hysterectomies and bladder sling procedures, were not medically necessary and sometimes resulted in serious medical complications.
Dr. Chacon is accused of falsifying patients' medical records and misrepresenting diagnoses to justify the unnecessary procedures. "FBI Las Vegas is determined to hold bad actors in healthcare accountable," said Special Agent in Charge Christopher S. Delzotto. He emphasized the FBI's commitment to pursuing justice for victimized patients and taxpayers.
A grand jury has charged Dr. Chacon with one count of healthcare fraud and eight counts of making false statements related to healthcare matters.
He was arrested on Wednesday, and a jury trial is scheduled for Nov. 18, 2025, before U.S. District Judge Anne R. Traum. If convicted, Dr. Chacon faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
