Reno doctor could see 20 years in prison if convicted on fraud charges
Reno doctor Samuel Chacon was arrested Wednesday on health care fraud charges. He's accused of filing medical claims for unnecessary gynecologic tests and surgeries.
Chacon was indicted on one count of health care fraud and eight counts of false statements related to health care matters. If convicted, he faces 20 years in prison. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge. His trial is scheduled for Nov. 18.
The embattled OB/GYN's license was suspended in June for five years. The Nevada Medical Board of Examiners found him guilty of malpractice in how he cared for a 26-year-old patient pregnant with twins. It was one of several cases the medical board brought against Chacon accusing him of malpractice.
The settlement on the one case allowed him to avoid hearings on multiple other cases that alleged Chacon performed unnecessary tests and surgeries, causing serious harm to his patients. Chacon can apply for his license again on June 7, 2030.
Chacon was the owner of Women’s Health Center of Reno and previously had surgical privileges at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center and Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.
