Fresh off a visit to former President Donald Trump’s Florida resort, Republican gubernatorial hopeful Perry Johnson released details of his plan to reform election laws in Michigan.
Johnson, on two occasions, did not answer when asked whether he believes Trump’s false claim that the 2020 election was stolen. Johnson endorsed Republican Attorney General candidate Matthew DePerno, who repeatedly promoted false election fraud claims, and appeared at a Tuesday fundraiser hosted where the former president repeated false claims about Detroit.
In a statement, Johnson said he and Trump “share a concern about election security.” The Bloomfield Hills businessman and self-proclaimed “quality guru” released a fact sheet outlining his support for tougher voter identification laws and revoking state funding from jurisdictions that have out-of-balance poll books.
Michigan Republican Party Co-Chair Meshawn Maddock praised Johnson’s plan in a statement on Twitter. Maddock was also in Florida for DePerno’s fundraiser and said she spoke privately with Johnson and Trump.
Johnson’s plan pledges to reward jurisdictions that balance precinct poll books with “extra-statutory revenue sharing and penalize those who do not.” He specifically vowed to “finally start holding jurisdictions such as Detroit accountable.” Out-of-balance poll books occur when the number of ballots don’t match the number of votes reported in poll books.
