Rowley shares personal experience with threat on his life during Whistleblower Bill debate - New York Carib News - NYCaribNews

During Friday’s debate for The Whistleblower Protection Bill, Trinidad & Tobago Prime Minister Keith Rowley shared his personal experience as the opposition leader in 2015 when he was targeted and had to drive around in a bulletproof vehicle because he was targeted by certain elements for his determination to expose corruption at all levels in the country.

Rowley opened the debate stating that it is an unfortunate fact that there is an overwhelming level of corruption in Trinidad and Tobago society, no individual or group.

He said the Parliament needs to act because corruption will flourish in the society. He was honest in his belief that passing the bill will not end all corruption but discourage and preserve in some instances those who may think about engaging in corruption.

Sharing his personal experience with a threat on his life, he said the bill would protect those who like him, who are committed to exposing and eliminating corruption.

The bill will deal with instances of corruption from inside institutions to the streets, and requires an overwhelming majority to pass.

Rowley he urged the Opposition to “put the politics aside, put the political divisions aside and put TT in front.” (The UNC did not support the bill while it was before a joint select committee).

He also said that lawmakers can make amendments to the Constitution to pass laws which offend any of its provisions.
