Intensive Investigation into the Spread of False and Manipulated Information

The police are intensifying their crackdown on the dissemination of false and manipulated information that could incite social unrest. The number of accounts under investigation in connection with the spreading of misinformation—such as the claim that semiconductor company performance bonuses have been scrapped—has increased from seven to twelve.

The National Police Agency’s Task Force for the Control of False Information announced on July 6 that it is investigating major acts of spreading misinformation, including: rumors of 900,000 barrels of crude oil flowing into North Korea amid the Middle East war; claims of North Korean involvement in the 5·18 Democratization Movement; incidents undermining citizens' voting rights, such as the ballot paper shortage; and alleged official documents declaring the scrapping of performance bonuses by domestic semiconductor companies.

First, regarding the recent case in which false claims were circulated that the government had sent an official letter to Samsung Electronics and SK hynix urging them to abolish their existing performance bonus agreements as part of a profit-sharing system for excess semiconductor earnings, the police are conducting an investigation into twelve specific accounts.
