Russian propaganda continues to spread disinformation, claiming that European countries are attacking ‘Ukrainian drones’ rather than Russian ones. According to the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, the information is being circulated through materials in Telegram channels.
The center explains that the sensational storyline centers around a report of an alleged Ukrainian drone crash on Romanian territory. As ‘proof’, they display a photo from a Romanian media outlet, where the drone clearly bears a Ukrainian inscription.
Context of the disinformation campaign
“There are widely circulating reports that a Ukrainian drone has crashed on Romanian soil. As ‘proof’, a photo from a Romanian media outlet is shown, where the UAV bears a Ukrainian inscription,” the statement reads.

In reality, the image shows a typical Russian reconnaissance drone of the ‘Gerbera’ type, which is a version of the Iranian drone ‘Shahed’ without a warhead. The inscriptions on it, except for one, are written in Russian. Russia widely uses drones of this type to attack Ukraine, and the presence of inscriptions in any language and of manually applied markings cannot be proof of the drone’s origin.
