S. Korean military psyops unit began sending leaflets into North a year before martial law crisis, whistleblower says - 한겨레

A former soldier who participated in leaflet-dropping operations against North Korea has testified that the Defense Psychological Operation Group, a unit directly under the Ministry of National Defense, secretly sent leaflets to North Korea from October 2023 until just before the emergency martial law declaration on Dec. 3, 2024.

While some media reports previously indicated that propaganda leaflets were sent by military authorities as well as civilian groups during the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, this is the first time a soldier involved in the operation has provided testimony.

The Defense Psychological Operation Group, or DPOG, is a unit tasked with conducting psychological warfare operations, such as distributing leaflets and broadcasting via loudspeakers, in times of emergency.

“In mid-October 2023, I sent about 10 large balloons carrying leaflets toward the North for the first time with fellow unit members at the front line,” the former soldier, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told the Hankyoreh on Sunday. The young man served in the psyops unit from 2023 to 2024.
