Sacramento City Council meeting gets heated as Katie Valenzuela calls for censure of Jeff Harris - KCRA Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Sacramento Council member Katie Valenzuela is calling for the censure of her colleague, Jeff Harris, following what she described as a series of racially insensitive incidents involving Harris. Harris said he thought the claims were false.

"I'm exhausted. It's hard to have these conversations," Valenzuela said following a city council meeting on Tuesday. "I want people to realize that change takes uncomfortable conversations."

Ahead of Tuesday's meeting, Valenzuela held a news conference calling for the censure and for cultural training for all city council members.

Valenzuela said she experienced pushback from Harris regarding a resolution on the Oct. 11 agenda recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day.

Her staff shared a series of text messages, they said, between Valenzuela and Harris in which Harris appears to ask if the resolution is related to campaign fundraising. Valenzuela states that she doesn't "take corporate donations" and said that she believed linking the two showed a lack of cultural understanding about the importance of indigenous history.

Valenzuela also expressed concern about Harris' call to have Keyan Bliss, a member of the Sacramento Community Police Review Commission, removed from his position.
