Sara Lee agreed to a $1 million settlement to resolve claims its pound cake products are made with “all butter” despite containing other shortening ingredients. Consumers do not need proof of purchase to make a claim.
The settlement benefits consumers who purchased Sara Lee All Butter Pound Cake products between April 27, 2017, and July 29, 2022.
Sara Lee offers numerous desert products such as pound cakes, cheesecakes, pies and sweet breakfast pastries. One of the brand’s most popular products is its pound cake.
According to a class action lawsuit against the company, Sara Lee’s pound cakes are misleadingly marketed as “All Butter” pound cakes. In reality, the products allegedly contain other shortening ingredients such as soybean oil.
Consumers say they were misled by Sara Lee’s “All Butter” marketing and were tricked into paying more based on the belief that the pound cake products were made with only butter. If they knew the truth, plaintiffs and other consumers allegedly would have paid much less for the pound cakes or wouldn’t have purchased the products at all.
The class action lawsuit includes claims under Illinois consumer protection and false advertising laws.
Sara Lee has faced more than one class action lawsuit over its pound cake.
