Scammers target Iowa pet owners with false claims about lost animals - KCCI

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa warns pet owners about scammers posing as representatives and demanding money to reclaim lost pets

DES MOINES, Iowa —

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa has issued a warning about scammers falsely claiming to represent the organization and targeting pet owners during vulnerable moments.

The ARL reported a case where a scammer contacted the owner of a lost pet, falsely claiming the pet had been found injured and demanding thousands of dollars for its return.

To avoid being scammed, the ARL recommends verifying the identity of anyone claiming to represent an organization. Pet owners should independently look up the organization’s contact information and call directly to confirm the claims.

The organization also emphasized that reputable shelters will never ask for payment up front without giving pet owners the opportunity to visit their facility and see their pet.

If you suspect fraudulent activity or have been targeted by a pet-related scam, the ARL advises contacting them or your local law enforcement agency.
