Criminal groups have targeted families searching for loved ones who disappeared at the border while migrating to the United States, seizing data and photos on their social networks, stalking them on WhatsApp and by phone, and reporting alleged kidnappings of missing relatives with false proofs of life and demands of thousands of dollars for ransoms, reports NBC News. The practice seems to affect multiple families who have publicly posted about the disappearance of their loved ones who migrated north.
Scammers make contact in private and send dubious photos of the missing migrant that are often fake and stuck together. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reported having no record of these scams and only knows of actual kidnappings. Texas border county law enforcement officers say criminals are taking advantage of the unprecedented numbers of reports of disappearances at the border, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection reporting migrant searches and rescues at the border rising from 4,920 in fiscal year 2019 to 12,833 in fiscal year 2021.
