SCHENECTADY — A Schenectady businessman convicted in a Mafia-linked cocaine ring is facing a sweeping new criminal case — this time accusing him and his wife of exploiting pandemic-related government programs and committing insurance fraud.

Jeffrey Civitello Sr., the owner of Focus Construction in Schenectady, and his wife, Patricia Civitello, are charged in a 143-count indictment handed up in Schenectady County Court that accuses them of fraud, theft, tax crimes and scores of counts of both falsifying business records and filing false documents.

Patricia Civitello, 50, a regular spectator in U.S. District Court when her family members and their co-defendants were on trial, will now be at the defense table. She faces allegations she filed false landlord certification, claiming her tenants were not paying rent, which enabled her to receive more than $90,000 from the New York State Emergency Rental Assistance Program between Sept. 21, 2021, and Aug. 1, 2022.

The program, operated by the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, was intended to help struggling households and landlords as a result of the pandemic.
