Second whistleblower alleges MMSD operator mismanagement at wastewater facilities - WTMJ

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – A second whistleblower is speaking out against the operator of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, accusing Veolia North America of mismanaging the district’s wastewater treatment facilities.

The whistleblower, identified May 13 as Greg Gryskiewicz, worked for Veolia on day-to-day operations at MMSD wastewater facilities for 15 years before leaving the company in 2024. During his time with the company, he held several positions including as a security guard, a special utility operator at the Milorganite fertilizer facility, and an on-site machinist. It was before starting the machinist position he told reporters he first questioned how facilities were being run, leading him to quit what he described as a “dream job” two weeks after receiving it.

“Existing equipment along with District-funded equipment is not properly maintained…this cycle of ‘run to fail and not fix’ has led to complete asset destruction,” said Gryskiewicz at an event held by community advocacy group Common Ground in front of the Pierhead Lighthouse in Milwaukee. It’s the second such event facilitated by the organization centered around a whistleblower’s allegations against Veolia.

The group is conducting its own investigation of Veolia’s operation of the Jones Island and South Shore Water Reclamation Facilities, using testimony from several people they say have reached out expressing concerns, while also calling on MMSD to conduct a third-party audit of Veolia before deciding...
