PORTLAND (WGME) – Senator Angus King says he secured confirmation that whistleblower protections remain intact at the VA.
During a Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee hearing, King questioned Michael Tierney, President Donald Trump's nominee to lead the VA’s Office of Accountability and Whistleblower Protection.
King says last year, the VA was requiring its employees to sign a non-disclosure agreement that did not include the legally required exclusion language for whistleblowers.
“Mr. Tierney, I'm worried about sort of counter currents going on here. One is whistleblower protection, which you've talked about and investigating claims and protecting whistleblowers,” King said.
“I will 100% say that NDAs and whistleblower activity have no role together," Tierney said. “It's very clear that any whistleblower statute overrides any type of NDA language. And I agree with that. There's no role for NDA’s and whistleblowers.”
King says whistleblowers will remain protected from retribution.
