The Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market Merchants Association, embroiled in controversy over the "grilled squid on a plate overcharging" issue, has filed a police complaint against the author of a false online post on a community platform.
The association stated on the 6th, "We visited the Seogwipo Police Station on the afternoon of the 5th and submitted a complaint against the author of the false post, citing violations of the *Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, etc.* and obstruction of business."
In the complaint, the association claimed, "The accused, during a trip to Jeju, purchased grilled squid on a plate at the Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market and posted false claims on an internet site, including photos of leftover products, alleging that merchants were selling items by removing contents. This false post misled the public into believing the market engages in overcharging, damaging our reputation."
They further argued that sales of grilled squid on a plate dropped by 60% after the controversy, causing significant business harm. Additionally, sellers reportedly suffered material and mental distress, including mockery from students on school trips visiting the market.
The association explained the decision to file the complaint, stating, "The author of the false post neither apologized nor took any action, leaving us with no choice but to proceed legally."
