Seth Meyers didn't buy Donald Trump's latest claim about Iran for a second, tearing into the president's assertion that the country "very nicely" asked the U.S. to stop its military campaign. During Wednesday's "A Closer Look," the Late Nighthost dismissed the claim as "the most that never happened" before launching into a series of biting jokes.
Meyers devoted much of the segment to Trump's claim that Iran had supposedly called to say, "Please stop. Let's meet," arguing the story quickly unraveled as reports emerged of continued military action and even Fox News questioned who the president was actually negotiating with.
The comedian used the contradiction to fuel an extended riff, comparing Trump's account to an elderly grandparent falling for a scam call while repeatedly questioning the credibility of the president's version of events.
"Of all the conversations that never happened, that one is the most that never happened," Meyers quipped about the alleged exchange. "Iran called you up and said, 'Please stop.' Are you talking about a country you're at war with or your neighbor during a house party?"
Mimicking Trump, Meyers continued, "Yeah, Terry called me up and said, 'Please stop blasting Steely Dan.' I said, 'Sorry, no can do. It's only 3:00 a.m. Party's just getting started.' So he called me a pedophile protector and hung up. Communist."
