For holidaymakers heading back over the Channel from their summer breaks, the White Cliffs of Dover make for a stirring sight of home. But for Sri, they hold no such allure. “You get bored of them when you have seen them as much as I have,” he shrugged. As a crew member working for P&O Ferries, Sri crosses the Channel five times a day in the course of a single shift.
Even when he is not working, he is going to and fro because, like many of his fellow crew members, he lives on board, sharing living quarters cordoned off from passengers and unable to set foot on land for four months at a time.
