LETTERS: SEXUAL misconduct is abhorred in any civilised society. There are many examples including making sexual comments, lewd jokes, gestures, or looks; touching, grabbing, or pinching in a sexual way or spreading sexual rumours.

Others include intentionally brushing up against another in a sexual way; showing, giving, or leaving sexual pictures, illustrations, messages or notes; pulling off or down victim's clothing in a sexual way; writing sexual messages about another person on public walls or spied on while dressing or showering.

It is disgusting, intimidating, or embarrassing and may affect the victim either in his or her studies or work performance.

All forms of sexual harassment irrespective of the place of its occurrence are unwelcome and unwanted.

At the workplace, the victim may experience emotional trauma, anxiety, nervousness, depression and low self-esteem.

Besides creating a hostile and offensive work environment, the victim often chooses to resign from employment as they are threatened by the perpetrator from raising the problem, and therefore have often suffered in silence, as revealing it would tarnish their image.

Women are reported to have experienced more sexual harassment as compared to men.

Hence, the timely introduction of the Sexual Harassment Law in Malaysia ensures adequate protection for the victims in terms of reporting and establishing the claims of sexual harassment.
