KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Kalamazoo Township announced its treasurer, Sherine Miller, has resigned after two censures and a petition to the governor to remove her from office.
In an exclusive interview, she sat down with News Channel 3 after the resignation took effect Monday.
The board took away most of her responsibilities in January, and repeatedly accused her of irresponsibility with taxpayer money.
However, Miller says the financial misconduct claims are untrue, and claims that she retired rather than resigned.
“I have continually said that they are false allegations, but I'm tired," she said. "I am in my sixties and I don't really want to fight over right or wrong.”
Many of those allegations come from an investigative report of claims made against Miller spanning several years, accusing her of poor record-keeping, improper accounting and tense relationships with township staff.
Among other incidents, it claims an assessment mistake over the winter nearly cost the township $150,000, and that it could have been avoided if Miller had appointed a deputy treasurer.
But Miller says the township rejected each candidate she brought to them and left her in the dark.
“None of the board came to me to ask me questions," she said. "‘Hey, Sherine, did you try to appoint a deputy?’ I did, I tried to appoint a deputy three or four times.”
