Shropshire businesses given help to navigate changes in employment law - Ludlow Advertiser

Businesses have been given a helping hand to navigate complex changes in employment law.

Shropshire Chamber of Commerce hosted a recent webinar in collaboration with workforce specialists RedWizard and Freeflexer.

The session focused on upcoming "Umbrella Reforms" affecting organisations that use contractors, temporary workers, or labour supply chains.

Kelly Riedel, head of member success at Shropshire Chamber, said: "Many businesses use contractors, temporary workers or agency staff, which means they may have ‘umbrella’ companies as part of their supply chain.

"With joint and several liability set to become a central feature of the new rules, we felt this session was important to emphasise the importance of visibility, verification, and proportionate governance across everyone’s supply chains."

Umbrella companies employ agency workers and manage payroll, including tax and National Insurance deductions under PAYE.

From April 2026, new joint and several liability rules will apply.

This means recruitment agencies or end-clients could become liable for unpaid tax if an umbrella company fails to comply.

The reforms aim to reduce tax avoidance, protect workers, and increase accountability.
