SLMDA: Marijuana kills coronavirus claim false | Loop St. Lucia - Loop News St. Lucia

President of the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA), Dr Clarke warns of false claims that cannabis can kill the coronavirus.

The medical professional says while there are medicinal benefits to using cannabis, the impact on COVID-19 is still widely unknown by physicians.

An image circulating over social media, claiming marijuana kills coronavirus has triggered the response from the SLMDA

“There is no evidence to suggest marijuana could cure COVID-19. The World Health Organization advises against smoking to treat the coronavirus, and studies show smoking marijuana increases the risk of airway infections such as pneumonia, a condition that is developed in more severe coronavirus cases,” SLMDA President Dr Merle Clarke said.

“There was a paper which came out some time ago which seemed to indicate that there’s some benefit with COVID-19 and cannabis and what we’d like to say is more evidence is needed.”

Dr Clarke says that these suggestions cannot be proven and that people should not rely on cannabis to prevent or aid in COVID-19 management.

“The best tool in COVID-19 management continues to be vaccination and we encourage that.”

Dr Clarke says she understands the severe impact of COVID-19 on the economy and on the mental and physical health of persons and anything that can curb the spread and management of the virus is encouraged but it must be done judiciously.
