Smithey Law Group LLC operates as a women-owned employment law firm serving employers and employees throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia. Founder and Managing Partner Joyce Smithey launched the firm seven years ago after working 12 years at a large firm where she made equity partner.
Smithey started the practice to make a difference in others’ lives regardless of background. The firm’s commitment to women extends beyond ownership, with women directing virtually every aspect of operations and comprising the majority of staff. Smithey believes in mentoring, elevating and providing opportunities to the next generation of women.
Mentorship and professional development are embedded in the firm’s culture, including training and promoting from within. Smithey recruited Lisa Walker from law school and promoted her to senior associate after five years, placing her in charge of her own practice group. Walker, now a partner, empowers younger lawyers with similar opportunities Smithey provided.
When Walker approached Smithey in 2022 to promote LGBTQ+ equality, the firm launched an annual Pride Month employment law hotline. Walker spearheaded the pro bono program while Smithey provided funding, creating a successful initiative where attorneys answer employment questions from Maryland LGBTQ+ callers.
