Agadir – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has accused networks linked to Russia and Israel, as well as the international far right, of spreading and amplifying disinformation during the mass migration crisis in Ceuta last month.
Speaking to Spain’s Cadena SER radio on Monday, Sánchez said the claims were based on research by the European External Action Service (EEAS), the European Union’s diplomatic service. He said the disinformation circulated on social media following the mass influx of migrants into the Spanish-occupied enclave on July 30 and 31.
“After July 30 and 31, rumours and disinformation spread on social networks linked to Russia and Israel, and to an ultra-right international that always uses migration to attack both Spain and Europe and divide it,” Sánchez said.
The Spanish prime minister said it was “evident” that the crisis had been used to criticize his government, pointing to Madrid’s positions on Russia’s war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza as possible reasons.
At the same time, Sánchez stressed that the investigation into the causes of the influx remains ongoing and cautioned against concluding that a foreign state actor directly orchestrated the crisis.
