In the final four weeks, GoLocal is keeping an eye on the claims and statements candidates are making in debates, campaign ads, and press releases.
Here is one claim that we believe is misleading or, at best, is confusing.
TV Ad: Democratic Candidate for Lt. Governor Sue AnderBois
Providence City Councilor AnderBois claims that she delivered “clean energy, lowered costs and built more housing.”
Well, those claims range from false to vague.
We asked her about her claim regarding clean energy and lower costs, and she stated that:
The bills I wrote, sponsored and passed on energy -- including the building energy reporting ordinance and the carbon neutral buildings act -- which would not have happened without my sponsorship and my leadership, have saved the city money on our energy bills. You can watch the meetings where this is discussed that I reference above where we discuss and get reports on the results of implementation. There was monetary savings in our energy bills - and actually also savings resulting from greater efficiencies in our bill paying practices (reduced late fees, etc). This is all documented and discussed in public meetings on the record. Instead of increasing energy bills as nearly every Rhode Islanders is seeing, we are seeing our energy costs decrease -- which as a city we can then spend on the necessities our residents need.
But the ad infers that Providence residents’ costs went down, and that is far from the truth.
