A Thai media outlet published false claims that “South Korea threatened to dispatch troops to Cambodia,” prompting the South Korean Embassy in Thailand to immediately refute the report.
The South Korean Embassy in Thailand stated via Facebook on the 15th, “The South Korean government is making all diplomatic efforts to protect its citizens. However, the Bangkok Post’s report claiming that ‘South Korea warned it could take military action against cross-border scam organizations’ or that ‘South Korea threatened to dispatch troops to eliminate scam groups’ is untrue.”
Earlier, the Bangkok Post had included these claims in an article published the previous day discussing crime issues in Cambodia. It was reported that among the victims in Cambodian crime complexes, there are not only South Koreans but also numerous Thais. The Bangkok Post included the disputed content while referencing the South Korean case. However, the South Korean government has only formed and dispatched a joint government response team involving the Korean National Police Agency and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to the region, but it has never mentioned “military action.”
Following the embassy’s announcement, the disputed content in the Bangkok Post was removed. The revised article now only states, “Several countries, including South Korea and China, are pressuring Cambodia to dismantle fraud organizations operating within the country.”
