The special counsel team investigating the insurrection led by Cho Eun-suk requested a prison sentence of two years for former President Yoon Suk-yeol, who was indicted on charges of false testimony for claiming he intended to convene a Cabinet meeting before declaring martial law on December 3.
The special counsel team made this request during the final hearing of Yoon’s perjury case, held on the 16th at the 32nd Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Ryu Kyung-jin).
“The crime of perjury is a serious offense that hinders judicial institutions from discovering the substantive truth and ultimately undermines the entire judicial function of the state,” the special counsel team stated. “The defendant, having served as a prosecutor for over 20 years, was fully aware of the gravity of perjury.”
They added, “Despite his duty as president to uphold the Constitution and laws and protect the lives and safety of citizens, the defendant abandoned this responsibility, declared martial law, caused national chaos, and damaged the country’s international credibility. Yet, he betrayed the public’s expectation to uncover the truth about martial law and made false statements, making his guilt extremely severe.”
The team further noted, “Even now, instead of reflecting on his actions, he denies the charges and repeats false claims to conceal the truth,” and urged the court to sentence him to two years in prison.
