A former controller at Spring Hill Golf Club is suing the private course, claiming she was wrongfully terminated after raising a series of complaints about the club’s financial practices.
Nancy Schuler alleged in a Dec. 2 lawsuit that the club repeatedly ignored her warnings about wrongful financial actions, which she says included improper W-2 wage reporting, unreported cash income and expenditures by Spring Hill, and “fronting” of monies to members related to club-sponsored gambling events and activities.
Schuler, who worked at the private golf club since March 2016, was fired on April 27 of this year, her lawsuit said.
Spring Hill Golf Club, located in Wayzata, is ranked No. 2 on the Business Journal's 2022 list of toughest courses in the Twin Cities. In 2021, it was included in Golf Digest's "America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses."
In her job as controller, Schuler handled bookkeeping and preparation of ordinary financial reports, served as liaison to Spring Hill’s auditors, oversaw information technology for Spring Hill, and served as the liaison to Spring Hill’s third-party human resource and payroll service provider, the lawsuit says.
Sonia Miller-Van Oort and David Watson of Sapientia Law Group are representing Schuler. Sarah Crippen of Best and Flanagan is the lead attorney for Spring Hill Golf Club. Attorneys for Schuler declined to elaborate on the allegations beyond the lawsuit and Crippen could not be reached for comment.
