South Korean actor Gong Yoo has been legally exonerated after a woman who falsely accused him of harassment was found guilty of defamation. The case, which garnered significant public interest, concluded on July 29 with the Daejeon District Court’s Criminal Division 5 issuing a suspended sentence to the defendant.
Identified only as ‘A’, the woman in her 40s was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years of probation. The court held her accountable for violating South Korea’s Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilisation and Information Protection.
Between January 2020 and March 2021, the woman posted 235 defamatory statements across various online platforms, falsely alleging that Gong Yoo was threatening and harassing her. One of the most notable incidents occurred during a live broadcast by Gong Yoo in January 2020, where the woman commented: “I’m being threatened from behind, and there isn’t a single day I haven’t been threatened." She further claimed: “He torments me to the point of neurosis."
