Starbucks union employees say company is penalizing them for being members - ABC NEWS 4

SEATTLE (KOMO) — Nationwide, thousands of Starbucks employees, including many who are part of a union, said they are being penalized for being members.

Cat Ureta, a member of Starbucks Workers United, has filed a complaint with the National Labors Relations Board. They are accusing the company of retaliating against unionized workers by not offering extra benefits, wage increases and improvements to retirement plans.

Dmitri Iglitzin is the attorney representing the union and said the company’s actions are a violation of federal law.

“Section 7 of the (National Labor Relations Act) gives the workers the right to seek to unionize without being retaliated against,” Iglitzin said.

According to the complaint filed by NLRB, “Under the law, those stores that voted to be part of a union, during this collective bargaining process, which we are going to honor, by law, any new benefit that we create for the company, we are not permitted, by law, any new benefit that we create for the company, we are not permitted by law, to offer that benefit to stores that voted for the union while they are in collective bargaining.”

As this plays out in court, Iglitzin said winning the case isn’t the only goal.

“The remedy will be all the workers who did not get these benefit improvement, wage increases, some benefit changes, starting rollout of a 401K plan, with some minimal match, all workers that did not get it will get it, “ Iglitzin said.
