State accuses feds of making ‘false claims’ - kttc.com

SAINT PAUL, Minn. (KTTC) – The head of the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) said he needs to “correct the public record” when it comes to recent claims by the federal government.

It all has to do with the number of undocumented immigrants with criminal convictions in DOC’s custody.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) put out a news release critical of Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for what it deemed “a lack of cooperation” from the DFL leaders.

“Governor Walz and Mayor Frey REFUSE to cooperate with ICE law enforcement and will not let us into their jails,” said Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary of public affairs. “They have released nearly 470 criminal illegal aliens including violent criminals back onto the streets of Minnesota. They have made it abundantly clear they are prioritizing politics over public safety.”

That’s 470 criminal undocumented immigrants DHS has accused Minnesota of releasing since President Donald Trump started his second term in the White House.

Corrections Commissioner Paul Schnell called that assertion “inexplicable” in a news release of his own.

According to Schnell, 84 people with ICE detainers were released by the state in 2025.

In each case, he said, ICE was notified in advance, with coordinated custody transfers when requested.

Furthermore, DHS reported that 1,360 non-U.S. citizens were in the state’s custody.
