The Kansas Department of Revenue recently announced it has stopped more than $230 million in fraudulent tax refund payments since 2019 by identifying suspicious tax returns before refunds are issued.
The department said its tax processing system automatically flags returns that appear unusual or suspicious. The release states those returns are then reviewed by tax experts to confirm they are legitimate before any refund is sent.
State officials said the process helps protect taxpayer dollars by ensuring refunds go only to eligible filers and not to scammers using stolen identities or false information.
While the extra review may take additional time for some taxpayers, the department said it is necessary to prevent fraud and keep the tax system secure.
